Interesting to see Kathleen Ferrier performing at an early stage in her career. Born in Lancashire of Welsh ancestry, she was an accomplished pianist who did not take up singing in earnest until 1937 at the age of twenty-five. Following the end of WWII her career took off as a stage, concert and recording artist. She toured Europe and the USA , and was a favourite of Benjamin Britten who wrote some pieces specifically for her contralto voice.
Sadly she died of cancer at the height of her career, in 1953, aged forty-one. Bruno Walter, the renowned conductor, said of her: “The greatest thing in music in my life has been to have known Kathleen Farrier and Gustav Mahler – in that order”.
