I don’t know for certain but I think this article refers to rugby. It was commonly termed ‘football’ at this time. Football was usually termed ‘Association’, from where ‘soccer’ derived from.

A further comment. Many non-conformists was very much opposed to playing and watching rugby . This was because of it’s combative nature, it’s association with public houses, drinking, bad language and anti-social behaviour by supporters. By contrast rugby was strongly supported by the Anglican Church, who defined as part of the muscular Christianity school of thought.
